Just launched this week is BuildingRating.org. The process of rating buildings for energy performance is not new. But the effort to standardize the ratings a la a national “miles per gallon” standard for buildings from homes to offices is new.
The website makes it easy to find info on policy and programs around the globe related to building ratings.
On the US building rating map you can zero in to see where home labeling programs are up and running (orange dots) and learn more about commercial rating requirements.
This is an important resource and an important start. On the residential side, we need to keep a close understanding of where homes are being rated for performance. The next step is to start tracking and reporting whether or not these homes see an increase in value at resale due to increased energy efficiency. Positive trends there will surely lead to consumer-driven demand for other home energy improvements.
Thanks to the Institute for Market Transformation and the National Resources Defense Council for creating this transparent tool!
