This creates the limitation of hydrogen cells leaving experts in the field of green technologies uncertain on the use of hydrogen as a source of fuel. This has also been an issue of contention on the utilization and economic viability of the hydrogen economy.
Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion
Water on the earth’s surface absorbs a lot of solar energy. This is because water is known to occupy more than 70 percent of the earth’s surface, oceans being the largest shareholder. Research has shown that the amount of solar energy absorbed by water in oceans alone is equivalent to the total energy stored in about 250 billion oil barrels in a single day. Ironically, the United States uses about 7.5 billion oil barrels in a single year. This shows the viability of this green technology technique in generating 33 times more energy per day from simply tapping the suns energy from the ocean waters. This is more than the entire products of petroleum that the United States consumes every year. This shows the strength and capability of tapping this form of energy.
The temperature difference between the surfaces of ocean water and that of water in the bottom of the ocean is what is harnessed in converting heat energy to electrical energy. The temperature difference exists because the surface of water is heated by the sun while water found at the bottom of the ocean is cooler. This technology is commonly referred to as ocean thermal energy conversion and usually abbreviated as OTEC. This technology has the limitation of not being very efficient in generating electricity at a fast rate.
There is a lot of debate on the existence and effect on climate change as well as global warming on the environment.
